Multimedia-Kunst in Zürich: Ein Restaurant wird zum Kunst-Objekt
Biografie von Philipp Geist

Mit Beginn der Dämmerung verwandelt sich vom 27.11. bis 31.12.2005 das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude des Lake Side Restaurants in Zürich in eine 450qm große, dreidimensionale Videokunst-Installation.

Geschaffen hat sie der Multimedia-Künstler Philipp Geist (1976) aus Berlin, ein Aufsteiger der jungen Kunstszene: Gemeinsam mit dem Sinfonieorchester OBC Barcelona und der finnischen Soundformation Pan Sonic trat Philipp Geist 2004 als Video-Artist bei der Eröffnung des Sonar Festivals in Barcelona auf. Geist war auf dem für Neue Medien renommierten Mutek Festival in Montreal, dem Dissonanze Festival in Rom und auf der Clubtransmediale in Berlin vertreten. Seine Videoarbeiten wurden in international bedeutenden Kunstinstitutionen wie dem Central House of Artists (CHA) in Moskau, dem Institut of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London, der Nationalgalerie in Warsaw (Zacheta), bei der Eröffnung der Pinakothek der Moderne in München gezeigt - und nun zum ersten Mal in der Schweiz.

Für seine Zürcher Arbeit verzichtet der Wahlberliner bewusst auf Leinwände, sondern projiziert direkt auf die Betonfassade bzw. die Fensterfronten, die mit spezieller Projektionsfolie präpariert wurden. Jeden Abend erwarten den Besucher wechselnde, teils minimal puristische, teils traumhafte und schemenhaft zerbrechliche Bildkompositionen. Ausgangsbasis aller Videoarbeiten von Philipp Geist ist ausschließlich selbst gefilmtes und erstelltes Filmmaterial. Seine Sujets findet Geist in alltäglichen Dingen wie Haarbürsten, Blättern, Regentropfen oder Fenstervorhängen, die er aus ihrem gewohnten Kontext löst und mittels spezieller Kamera- und Videotechniken, mit Bewegungsunschärfe und Überlagerungen in neue Bild- und Bedeutungszusammenhänge fügt.

Speziell für den Winterzauber im Lake Side hat sich Philipp Geist auf die Suche nach winterlich-weihnachtlichen Motiven gemacht, die die Verbindung zwischen Konsum und Sinnlichkeit aufzubrechen versuchen, und stattdessen den Blick auf das Reine, Ästhetische lenken, das im vielfach verkitschten Weihnachtsfieber zu oft verstellt wird.

So bekommt eine Stadtfahrt durch die hoch kommerzialisierte Oxford-Street in London ein gänzlich neues Gesicht, da sie bei Nacht und durch die Glasscheibe aufgenommen, durch Regentropfen verzerrt, nur noch schemenhaft die weihnachtlichen Blinklichter erahnen lässt. Und Wunderkerzen, abbrennende Wachskerzen oder Schneeflocken erhalten durch mikroskopische Nahaufnahmen eine Vielfältigkeit, die dem Auge ohne technische Hilfsmittel verbogen bleiben würde.

Durch den Verzicht auf die Leinwand und die Nutzung des dreidimensionalen, klar gegliederten Körpers als Projektionsfläche steigert Geist die Abstraktion der Motive, bei gleichzeitiger Rückgewinnung von Tiefe und Facettenreichtum. So geht Geist einen Dialog ein zwischen der denkmalgeschützten Architektur, seiner künstlerischen Arbeit und den Menschen ein, die in diesem Gebäude ein- und ausgehen: An der Schwelle zwischen Außen und Innen wird der Besucher selbst Teil des projizierten Bildes.

Geist lässt eine Winterwelt vor den Augen der Besucher entstehen, deren Inhalte und Motive, obwohl bekannt, in ihrer Größe und ungewohnten Darstellung überraschen, die Wahrnehmung des Zuschauers verändern und Sehgewohnheiten hinterfragen.

Da Geists Arbeit nicht durch Zufall am ersten Advent eröffnet wird, darf man gespannt sein, wie er mit seiner künstlerisch spielerischen Interpretation dem Thema Winter- und Weihnachten begegnet. Sicher ist, dass der Betrachter in eine traumhaft-poetische, stille Winter- / Lichterwelt eintauchen kann.

Beginning at sundown from 11.27 through 12.31.2005, the historically protected building housing
the Lake Side Restaurant in Zurich will be transformed into a 450 sqm. three-dimensional video art installation.

It is the work of Berlin-based multimedia artist Philipp Geist (1976), a rising star in the young art scene. Together with the symphony orchestra OBC Barcelona and the Finnish sound ensemble Pan Sonic, Philipp Geist appeared as a video artist at the opening of the Sonar Festival in Barcelona in 2004. He was represented at the Dissonanze Festival in Rome, at Clubtransmediale in Berlin and at the Mutek Festival in Montreal which is renowned for new media. His video works have been exhibited at important international art institutions including the Central House of Artists (CHA) in Moscow, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London, the National Gallery in Warsaw (Zacheta), at the opening of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich – and now for the first time in switzerland.

For his work in Zurich, the Berlin-based artist deliberately avoids the use of canvases and instead projects directly onto the concrete building façades and windows which have been prepared with a special projection foil. Every evening, visitors can expect to see a selection of images alternating between purist, dreamlike and intangibly fragile compositions. The starting foundation for all of Philipp Geist?s work is video material solely filmed and produced by himself. Geist finds the subjects for his work in everyday things like hairbrushes, leaves, raindrops and curtains. He releases these objects from their usual setting and places them in new visual and correlated contexts by employing special camera and video techniques using motion blur and superimposition.

Especially for Winterzauber (Winter Magic) in Lake Side, Philipp Geist went in search of wintry, Christmasy motifs which attempt to break the link to consumption and indulgence, and instead direct visitors’ attention toward the pure aesthetic component that is all too often obscured by the kitschy madness of Christmas.

It is in this way that a ride along the highly commercialized Oxford Street in London takes on a completely new appearance as it is seen through a window pane. Distorted by the raindrops at night, it allows viewers only a vague impression of the twinkling Christmas lights. Microscopic close-ups give sparklers, burned down candles and snowflakes an element of diversity that would have remained unappreciated by the human eye without the aid of technology.

By opting to use the three-dimensional, defined structure contours as projection surfaces instead of canvases, Geist increases the motifs’ abstraction while simultaneously regaining depth and diversity. In this way, Geist initiates a dialogue between the historically protected architecture, his artistic work and the people going in and out of the structure: The visitor himself becomes part of the projected image on the threshold between the inside and outside of the building.

Geist allows a wintry world to emerge in front of visitors’ eyes. The subject matter and motifs, although familiar, astonish with their size and unusual presentation while altering the observer’s perception and challenging conventional viewing habits.

Given that the opening of Geist’s work will coincide with the first day of Advent, it will be intriguing to see how he uses his playful, artistic interpretation to approach winter and Christmas themes. One thing is for certain: Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a tranquil, wintry, dreamlike world of lights.

Opera dell' artista multimediale, Philipp Geist (1976), stella nascente della nuova scena artistica berlinese.: Insieme a l'orchestra sinfonica OBC Barcelona e la formazione sonora finlandese Pansonic, Geist appare nella parte di video-artist per l'apertura del Sonar Festival Barcelona 2004, davanti a 5000 spettatori. Geist si esibisce al Mutek Festival di Montreal, rinomato per la sua attenzione ai nuovi media, il Dissonanze Festival di Roma e la ClubTransmediale di Berlino. Presenta le sue live-video-performances in vari istituti culturali d'importanza internazionale, come il Central House of Artists (CHA) a Mosca, l'Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) a Londra, la Galleria Nazionale a Varsavia (Zacheta), per l'apertura della Pinacoteca di Arte Moderna a Monaco di Baviera e adesso per la prima volta in Svizzera.

Per il suo lavoro zurighese l'artista, berlinese per scelta, rinuncia intenzionalmente a tele e schermi e proietta direttamente sulla facciata di cemento e sulle finestre del Lake Side, preparate con una pellicola da proiezione speciale. Ogni sera i visitatori ammireranno composizioni d'immagini in parte minimal-puristiche, in parte oniriche e indistintamente fragili. Tutti i suoi video-lavori si basano su materiale esclusivamente ripreso e elaborato dallo stesso Philipp Geist, che trova i suoi soggetti tra cose quotidiane come una spazzola, delle foglie, pioggia o una tenda, le quali vengono astratte dal loro contesto abituale tramite tecniche di ripresa particolari, sfocature e sovraimposizioni, che nell'insieme assumono un nuovo significato.

Appositamente per il Winterzauber (Magia d'Inverno) al Lake Side, Philipp Geist ha raccolto motivi invernali e natalizi, che spezzerebbero il legame tra consumismo e sensualità, spostando l'attenzione su estetica e purezza, che spesso, nel kitsch della febbre natalizia, periscono.

Così un tour nella altamente commercializzata Oxford Street di Londra assume un nuovo volto, essendo ripreso di notte, attraverso il finestrino rigato dalla pioggia, lascia solamente intravedere le intermittenti luci natalizie. Candele e fiocchi di neve, mediante riprese ravvicinate, ottengono un molteplice significato, che altrimenti rimarrebbe celato.

Rinunciando allo schermo convenzionale e utilizzando come superficie un corpo tridimensionale, rigorosamente strutturato, Geist esalta l'astrazione dal motivo e allo stesso tempo derivandone sfaccettature e profondità. Ne nasce un dialogo tra architettura, artista e visitatori che, entrando e uscendo dall'edificio, partecipano attivamente alla proiezione.

Siccome l'inaugurazione non a caso avrà luogo all'Avvento, si puo essere curiosi di come Geist interpreterà il tema invernal-natalizio. Lo spettatore sarà avvolto in un'atmosfera altamente onirica e poetica.

Dès la tombée de la nuit du 27.11 au 31.12.2005, l’édifice et patrimoine historique accueillant le restaurant « Lake Side » à Zurich se transformera en une installation vidéo tridimensionnelle et grande de 450 m?.

Philipp Geist, professionnel du multimédia et jeune artiste en herbe de la scène est à l’origine de cette création : En collaboration avec l’Orchestre Symphonique OBC Barcelona et « Soundformation Pan Sonic » de Finlande il fit en 2004 son entrée en scène devant environ 5 000 personnes lors de l’ouverture du festival du son à Barcelone. Philippe Geist fut également représenté au grand festival Mutek de Montréal pour les nouveaux médias, au festival Dissonance à Rome et au « Clubtransmediale » à Berlin. Ses Live-Video-Performances *ont pu être appréciées dans des institutions d’art de renommée internationale tels que la « Central House of Artists » (CHA) à Moscou, l’« Institut of Contemporary Art » de Londres, la Galerie Nationale à Warschau « Zacheta », et lors de l’ouverture de la « Pinakothek der Moderne » à Munich.

Pour la réalisation de son projet à Zurich, le berlinois de 29 ans a volontairement renoncé à l’utilisation de toiles et projette son travail directement sur une façade en béton, plus particulièrement sur les fenêtres, qui sont pour cette occasion revêtues d’un matériau spécial. Chaque soir, les visiteurs pourront admirer différentes compositions d’images extrêmement pures laissant une grande place au rêve. Le point de départ de chacune des réalisations vidéo de Philipp Geist repose exclusivement sur les films qu’il a lui même filmés et produits.
Ses sujets, il les trouve dans les choses de tous les jours, comme les brosses à cheveux, les feuilles, les gouttes de pluie ou les rideaux, il les sort de leur contexte habituel et les présente sous une nouvelle image et situation, où par le recours à des caméras et techniques vidéo spécialisées ces sujets s’animent avec imprécision et se doublent.

Spécialement pour « Winterzauber » (l’hiver magique) à « Lake Side » Philippe Geist a recherché des motifs rappelant l’hiver et Noël, qui puissent éviter de faire le lien entre la consommation et la sensualité mais plus diriger le regard du visiteur vers le pure et l’esthétique, trop souvent oubliés au profit de la fièvre kitch de Noël.

C’est ainsi qu’une promenade le long de la rue très commerçante « Oxford Street » de Londres prend un tout autre aspect : elle avait été filmée en pleine nuit à travers les vitres d’un bus « City Tour »
En faisant l’objet d’un zoom comme au microscope, les bougies magiques, les cierges allumés ou flocons de neige dévoilent une multitude de choses qui n’auraient pu être appréciées à l’œil nu sans l’aide de moyens techniques.

En choisissant d’utiliser une structure tridimensionnelle aux contours bien définis à la place de toiles comme surface de projection, Philippe Geist rend le motif encore plus abstrait.
De cette manière il crée un dialogue entre l’architecture historique protégée, son travail artistique et le public, qui rentre et sort de cet édifice : En passant de l’intérieur à l’extérieur les visiteurs font parties intégrante de l’image projetée.

Philippe Geist laisse le public face à un monde hivernal, dont le contenu et les motifs, bien que connus, surprennent par leur taille et leur représentation inhabituelle, modifiant la perception de l’observateur et remettant en question ses habitudes visuelles.

Ce n’est pas parce que la création de Philipp Geist sera présentée le premier jour de l’avent, qu’il ne faut pas être impatient de découvrir comment il interprète artistiquement et d’une manière ludique le thème de Noël et de l’hiver. Il est en tout cas certain que le visiteur peut s’immerger dans un monde lumineux et serein de rêve et de poésie.
